An American Tale of Freedom’s Promise by Patrick Michael McFadden is a historical novel about the struggle for American Liberty from Britain. It covers the early years of the Revolutionary War surrounding the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The early war provides background, yet the true conflict is between a diverse set of spies, all Americans, but whose loyalties are split between the British and American causes.
Many pivotal battles take place in the Mid-Atlantic region during the early war, and General Washington utilizes the geography between New York and Philadelphia to his advantage. The Old York Road is critical to his success.
Bucks County in general, and the crossroads at Bristol & York Roads in particular, are central to the book’s story as the American forces continually march along this old interior roadway between winter forts in northwest Jersey and Valley Forge. The people along the crossroads, in the area known today as Hartsville, served General Washington and the Pennsylvania Militia with loyal hospitality throughout the conflict. Such fervor was largely due to the loyalty of the local Presbyterian community founded by the Rev. William Tennent.
During the book signing, a slide presentation will be shown, featuring many of the original properties that have been restored in Hartsville and along the Old York Road. Wendy Wirsch, President of the William Tennent House Association, will be available to discuss the local history and ongoing efforts to restore Rev. Tennent’s home, a structure that experts believe was built circa 1730.
