Continental Currency was a form of paper money authorized by the Second Continental Congress on 10 May 1775. It was issued to pay for the Defense of the Colonies and eventually to finance the War for Independence. Denominations of Continental Currency range from One Sixth of a Dollar to $80. The different denominations were authorized at various times between 1775 and 1779. Each denomination features a patriotic vignette which reflected the status of the conflict with England at the time they were issued.
This presentation will review Continental Currency and discuss the vignettes printed on them in the context of what had happened prior to their authorization. Inspired by Benjamin Franklin and others, these notes were created to rally the Colonists to the cause of Liberty and Independence. They were truly Patriotism In Print.
