Tis Death To Counterfeit – The Paper Money of Our Colonies and Continental Congress

To Counterfeit is Death was a seldom enforced threat which is seen on many of the bills issued during our British Colonial and Confederation eras. Mr. Ray Williams will be discussing the economic climate making paper money necessary, the counterfeiting of bills and the anti-counterfeiting measures taken, the famous colonists involved with paper money, and interesting stories involving some of the money being exhibited.

Refreshments will be served.  Event proceeds to benefit the preservation of the William Tennent House.

More About the Speaker

Ray Williams is a retired Electronics Technician living in Trenton.  He is also a life long Numismatist. He started specializing in US Colonial era coins, medals and paper money in 1988.  He is a co-author of a book entitled “Grading Guide For Early American Copper Coins”. He has written numerous articles and columns for the Colonial Coin Collectors Club Newsletter, Penny Wise – The Newsletter of the Early American Coppers, The Numismatist – Journal of the American Numismatic Association, The Journal of Early American Numismatics, Coin World and other clubs and Numismatic organizations.  He currently writes a column for the Numismatist entitled “Early American Money”.

Mr. Williams has served as President of the Colonial Coin Collectors Club, President of the New Jersey Numismatic Society, the Trenton Numismatic Club and Vice President of the Garden State Numismatic Association.  He is a fellow of the American Numismatic Society and the Rittenhouse Society. He frequently consults with writers, researchers and historic organizations on matters regarding Numismatics and History of 18th Century America.
